How To Shuffle Poker Chips

Learning how to shuffle poker chips takes a lot of practice. Follow the steps outlined below and be patient, it will come with time.

First, start with six or eight chips, the easiest starting point is a low number. You should have two equal sets of different colors. This will allow you to see that you are doing it properly.

Second, hold them steady with your thumb and index finger on one side and your ring and pinky fingers on the opposite side. Finger and thumb positioning is important. Your middle finger should be between (and touching) the two stacks, it will later be used for lifting and merging the stacks together.

Thirdly, lift the two stacks upward while holding them tightly together. Lift them in the center with your middle finger. The two stacks will merge together as you keep them tightly against each other. As you lift and apply outside pressure, forcing the two stacks together, lifting the chips will separate them from each other and allow spaces to open up. This makes the merging of the two stacks possible. In merging, they slide together to become one stack again. Continue to repeat the process - separating, lifting, and merging or shuffling together.

The key is to hold them together and lift them up while guiding them together with your middle finger and applying gentle pressure on the sides with your other fingers. Your middle finger should be in the “V” of the two sets of chips. As you lift, the two sets will try to move outward, but the pressure from the outside fingers will force them to lock together from the bottom.

A good way to practice is to start with 6 chips, separating into 2 stacks of 3, and then move up to a stack of 8. Later, you can increase up to 10 or even levels up to 20 chips. Have patience, more practice will result in greater ability to control the chips and separate and shuffle them together with one hand. It is not uncommon in the early going to lose control and have the chips fly all over the table, keep trying.

After one successful shuffle, you will have a single stack with alternating colored chips. You can return them to their original positions as two separate colors after you shuffle them three times. As a test, if you start with a stack of 4 whites and four yellow, you can shuffle and then return them to original stacks of 4 white and 4 yellow. It will take three shuffles to separate them back (assuming you were shuffling properly). With a little practice you will know how shuffle poker chips like a pro.
