Gavin Smith Professional Poker Player

Gavin Smith is a professional poker player from Canada and was born in 1968 in Guelph, Ontario. Smith came to the poker world as a winner of tournaments in no limit Texas Hold’em and seven card stud tournaments in the 1999 and 2000 World Poker Finals at Foxwoods Resort Casino. He won the
World Poker Tour (WPT)
Mirage Poker Showdown Championship event in 2005. Smith learned the game playing cribbage and rummy with his dad, and started playing poker in mixed games with friends when he was 26. He also became a dealer and set up his poker club in 1998.He first earned money in the
World Series of Poker
in 2003 and later made money in the $10,000 no limit hold'em main event in 2004, where he finished 52nd. He also won the B.A.R.G.E. Main Event in 2004, beating a competitive field of 249 players in Las Vegas, NV. In 2005, he cashed in as well, as in May he finished first in the World Poker Tour (WPT) Mirage Poker Showdown, earning a prize of $1,128,278. Later that same year, he advanced to the WPT final again in the 2nd Annual Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship, finishing third. In 2006, he made the WPT final table again, finishing 4th. For these accomplishments, he earned the World Poker Tour Player of the Year award for season IV. In 2006, Smith finished 2nd in the World Series of Poker circuit in New Orleans and won $293,930. In July of that year, Gavin won the World Pro-Am Challenge event at the Poker Dome Challenge, earning him the $500,000 first prize. He also won in his first appearance on Poker After Dark’s Season 3 Week 2 "19th Hole" by beating
Phil Ivey.
Gavin Smith is active in the online community, playing on several
online poker sites.

Full Tilt,
he plays under the alias birdguts as well as his own name, as one of their Full Tilt Pros. Gavin also co-stars with Joe Sebok on a show called "Prop Bets" on RawVegas.tv, a result of winning a humorous bet on Card Player Magazine points with Sebok. As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings were more than $4,600,000.
